The Functional Medicine Coaching Academy is the only certification program in collaboration with The Institute for Functional Medicine.
The Institute for Functional Medicine is the global leader in Functional Medicine education. The Institute offers physicians and other healthcare professionals a systems-based approach to the prevention, diagnosis, and comprehensive management of complex chronic disease.
Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease and engages both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It represents an evolution in the practice of medicine and effectively addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, Functional Medicine considers the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms.

The International Consortium of Health & Wellness Coaching (ICHWC), an independent, third-party certification board, recognizes FMCA as an ICHWC-Approved Transition Program. That means that upon graduation from FMCA, graduates receive their FMCA certificate of completion and are eligible to take the ICHWC Certifying Exam, through which they earn their designation as National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC). The objective of this national certification is to provide a minimum standard and measure of foundational competencies—the knowledge, tasks, and skills essential to the practice of health and wellness coaching—to further professionalize and advance the field. FMCA does not offer the certification exam directly to students; only ICHWC offers the exam, which is administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners.
