Finding the positive in a crisis may seem an impossible task. The world is feeling unsteady as a state of emergency is being declared by government officials, shelves at grocery stores are being wiped clean, and we are being encouraged to maintain social distancing.
The Functional Medicine Coaching Academy is founded on the principle of Positive Psychology. Staying positive during a crisis has many added health benefits such as lowering levels of distress and boosting your immune system.
1. Breathe. Slow Down.
Take a deep breath, and center yourself. Remind yourself to stay calm and enjoy life. Whether it is with an outdoor walk or run, your favorite online yoga or spin class, a meditation app, a bath, reading, baking or cooking, painting and creating art, watching movies—whatever it is that you love, find ways to incorporate them in your everyday life.
2. Reframe Your Mindset
Your mind is powerful. Reframe your mindset to focus on what is “now” in the present moment. Practice gratitude and celebrate all the good things that are happening in your life. Are you forced to pause – your kids are out of school and you are working from home? Use this as an opportunity to spend quality time together as a family. Incorporate your signature VIA Character Strengths to help remind you that you will get through this.
3. Create and/or Lean Into A Support Network
None of us can solve the vast set of global challenges we face today. Leaning into family and friends are a critical part of creating impact and taking care of ourselves at the same time. We are better together, stronger as a group. We give each other energy, creativity and often peace. Need an online support network? Connect with a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach! FMCA Health Coaches are ready to support you and help you navigate through this pandemic.
4. Control Your Health
Boosting your immune system is a great way to control your health and wellbeing. Keep up with your regular exercise, continue consuming foods high in vitamins, and getting deep restful sleep. 5. Do Not Panic – Reflect
One of the best ways to stay positive in the face of uncertainty is simply to be secure in knowing that you’ve done your best and learn to let go of the things you can’t control. Use this time of the forced pause to reflect on the things that matter in your life – “Through this crisis, what are the things that are really important to me?”
