Did you know that moms inherently possess a number of attributes that can give you a competitive edge as a health coach? Those traits and skills you’ve been honing naturally over the years can actually translate straight into a health coaching career!
The Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA) was founded by two moms who knew there was another way to have the career, family, and healthy lifestyle they desired. We are seeing so many new students who are moms taking control of their happiness and saying, “This is my time to become a health coach!” And with our various learning modalities, it is possible to make becoming a health coach work for you! Here are 7 reasons why we feel that moms make the best health coaches:
1- Innately Health Conscious
Moms know the importance of being health-conscious while their babies are in utero. Growing embryos and moms-to-be need tons of Functional Nutrition to grow a healthy human. Often, new moms start becoming nutrition-savvy during their pregnancies. Other moms know instinctively once their babies are born that in order to grow, their children need healthy food.
As a mom, you have seen the benefits of healthy living and therapeutic protocols in your own families. This makes you a savvy health coach because you know that being health-conscious is the foundation of a client’s path to long-lasting lifestyle change.
2- Great Listeners
Health coaches know that active listening is the key to your client’s success, establishing rapport, creating deep connections, and facilitating change—and moms do this naturally! Moms know that a child that is listened to feels heard, and a child that is heard feels safe to open up.
The same goes with clients. Listening is a powerful tool that moms are forced to cultivate from the moment their child utters their first cry. Your listening skills are intuitive from the start, making you able to really engage with your clients as a health coach.
3- Multitasking Rock Stars
As a mom, you are managing and balancing the family dynamic. You know that life is multi-layered. You are able to be everywhere and pay attention to multiple areas at once.
On the practical level, moms make great health coaches because health coaches manage multiple client relationships at once, as well as the day-to-day responsibilities of running a business on the side. Your juggling skills are already second to none, which means you prepared to step into this multifaceted role and handle what comes your way with natural ease and confidence.
4- The Power of Adaptability
Similar to multitasking, adaptability means the ability to change as your environment changes, to roll with the punches, to go with the flow, and to be flexible and forgiving. Moms know that just when they think they’ve mastered one developmental phase, they take another drastic developmental turn. Moms are experts in adapting.
In this way, they make amazing health coaches. A client’s personal growth is so similar to a child’s developmental phases in that there can be sudden, radical shifts in behavior and beliefs that alter the client’s path for good. Health coaches can coach someone who, given enough time and work on the client’s behalf, they may hardly recognize by the end of their coaching time together. That’s the transformative power health coaching can offer. Moms who are health coaches know that adaptability is key as they guide their clients to embrace changes calmly and willingly—the key to growth of any kind.
5- Balance Experts
Moms know the importance of balance between being the helicopter parent and the free-range parent. In health coaching, the fine balance between these two are just the same—to not go to one extreme or the other. Clients do best when given breathing space and support, not coddling. They also do best with accountability and not being left to “figure it all out” on their own. Moms use their coach approach to strike the perfect balance between styles for their clients.
6- Natural Nurturers
As a mom, nurturing your family becomes second nature. You pour love and care into your children, and they flourish. Nurturing is essential for growth, development, and change.
The same goes for health coaching. Your clients also need that “nurturing touch” to inspire and motivate them to achieve their goals, and make long-term changes to their diet and lifestyle. From weight loss and stress management to creating healthier relationships, health coaches are able to positively impact their client’s health and well-being in a variety of ways.
A healthy mom is there for her children when they need her to be and is not smothering, coddling, or overbearing. A mom knows that sometimes she has to be tough, which means setting boundaries, saying no, disciplining, and refusing to be treated like a doormat. On the other hand, a mom knows that she is also there to cheer her children on and make them feel unconditionally loved, special, and capable of achieving anything they set their minds to. This is exactly what a health coach does for their clients, guiding and encouraging them, while staying in their scope of practice.
As a mom, being a health coach gives you the flexibility to be there for your family and do meaningful, fulfilling work with your clients at the same time. To start your own health coaching career, download our free Info Packet.
