In life, people make choices and accept the outcome. We might plan our lives to go in one direction, but they often take unexpected turns. Experiences are a part of life, and accepting the reality of them can be painfully beautiful sometimes. If you are feeling lost, unsettled, or unhappy with where you are in life, know that this is normal.
Practicing acceptance is a powerful way to reassess your emotions, goals, and sense of self-purpose. This is referred to as radical acceptance, which is accepting life on life’s terms and not resisting what you cannot to change. Radical acceptance is about saying yes to life as it is and as it comes.
How to Practice Acceptance:
When you practice acceptance every day, you will be more prepared when difficult experiences in life pop up. The trick is to accept where you are in your journey and choose to enjoy it until you get to where you want to be. Stop resisting and accept – not becoming complacent, but having a sense of peace.
Here are some tips on accepting where you are:
Faith – By having faith in yourself or a higher power and practice knowing that everything is happening as it should. You are where you are because you are supposed to be.
Gratitude – Be grateful for what you have by taking a step back and jotting down a list of what you are thankful for. While creating your list, you’ll be pleasantly surprised just how long it is.
Perspective – Keep things in perspective, just because this specific time in your life is hard, doesn’t mean you have a hard life overall.
Empowerment – Find positive daily affirmations to keep you motivated or sign up for a class that will teach you something you have always wanted to learn! Singing, dancing, photography, writing? The sky is the limit! When using your creative imagination, you will solve problems more quickly and increase your productivity.
Movement – Don’t stand still; keep moving. Find ways in your day that you are doing something good for you! Take a 10-minute walk around the block, try a fun fitness class during lunch, or download an app with movements you can do at home. Either way, moving your body is a great way to move forward and feel change.
Motivation – When you become aware of what uniquely motivates you, you can consciously choose the activities that will bring the greatest success. Doing things that motivate you will affirm feelings of fulfillment and success.
Decision-making – Once you are motivated to acquire or do something, your brain activates circuits in the frontal lobes to start making decisions. This process can be disrupted by stress, worry, and doubt. But you can train your mind to stay focused, confident, and optimistic by accepting where you are and making clear, strong decisions.
Patience – Be patient with yourself. Depending on your situation, practicing acceptance can be a long and tedious road. It’s okay to get frustrated, angry, or sad. Feel your feelings, accept them, and let them go. The process of mindful self-reflection can enhance self-awareness, social awareness, and spiritual awareness, giving your life more meaning and purpose. You will also stimulate your brain’s circuitry for empathy, compassion, and morality.
Let it go – Work on letting go of past pain so that you can embrace life more fully.
Remember, the true key to happiness is accepting life the messy, beautiful way it is and letting go of everything you cannot control.
