What does your learning style say about your ability to absorb new information?
You can probably recall a learning experience that didn’t align with your style. It’s frustrating to feel like you aren’t absorbing the information you’re expected to take in!
At the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, we build our courses using the acronym “VARK,” which describes the four overarching modalities of student learning.
VARK Learning Styles:
VISUAL: You learn best when you can literally see how the pieces of a concept fit together. You prefer when presented with a robust whole rather than piecemeal bits of information. Summarizing charts and diagrams, rather than sequential slides of information, translates to positive educational outcomes for you.
AUDITORY: You learn best and are most successful when you are given the opportunity to hear information presented to you vocally. Lectures, recordings, interviews, and even songs can help you process and retain information.
READING/WRITING: You learn best when you are able to write notes as you follow along with a lesson. You are able to synthesize information quickly and create information-rich outlines to help you understand content. Slide decks, books, and writing prompts help you cement your learning.
KINESTHETIC: You prefer participatory learning. This style is sometimes referred to as “tactile learning.” Taking a physically active, hands-on role in the learning process helps you achieve your best educational outcomes. You succeed with practicing and applying knowledge in everyday life.
At The Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, we’ve honed our online health coaching certification program over the last 5 years to include components that cater to ALL learning styles.
Here are some of our favorite examples of how these learning styles are incorporated in our program!
Visual components: Videos, data visualizations, and charts
Auditory components: Interviews, lectures, and Coaching in Action videos
Reading/writing components: Slide presentations, articles, books, assignments
Kinesthetic components: Live Training Sessions and coaching role-play exercises
