Everybody is looking for ways to help their community, or at least to not make things worse. One tool that we use at The Functional Medicine Coaching Academy is the VIA Character Strength model. More than ever, we’re using this important tool to help our communities in times of adversity.
What are Character Strengths?
According to the VIA Institute on Character, your character strengths are the qualities that come most naturally to you. Every individual possesses all 24 character strengths in different degrees, giving each person a unique character profile. When you know your strengths, you can improve your life and thrive. Research reveals that people who use their strengths often are 18x more likely to flourish than those who don’t use their strengths.
Some of the top character strengths you can use to help your community are:
What/who are you SO grateful for today? What would you really miss if it were not around? Make a list – in writing or in your mind of everything/everyone you're grateful for. Think about all of the people and wonderful things going on in your life and take time to appreciate them. Then take time to appreciate yourself and your body and everything it does for you – and all its hard work for you.
Think about the people you care about. Let them know you love them and are thinking about them. Take time to write them a letter about why you love and care about them. Mail it to them, or read it to them personally. In return, when others are giving you love and kindness, accept it with an open heart — as you would want them to do with yours.
People need to laugh and lighten up, even in heavy times! If humor and playfulness come naturally to you, you have a lot to offer others to help find some release. Share jokes and ask your community for recommendations on their favorite comedies. Play games over Zoom or FaceTime, like Charades that get you moving. One of the benefits of learning to not take ourselves TOO seriously is laughter, which is GOOD for our bodies and our souls.
Is there someone in your house or neighborhood who could use a little help? What can you do for them? Large or small, being kind not only helps others, but also helps yourself.
Check-in with everyone. Who is around you? How are they doing? Is there anything you can do to assist or support them? Think about how you can aid those around you; it’ll make you feel good to see the people you love be happy.
Pitch in. Share. Encourage those around you— or far away – who are needing support. This is a time for connecting and working together to build strength and hope. Enjoy being part of a team working for the greater good.
