Mark Hyman, M.D., joins FMCA’s board of advisors. “We’re absolutely thrilled Dr. Hyman will be sharing his decades of experience, talent and creativity with us as we work to grow our program, and transform healthcare with our coaches,” says Sandra Scheinbaum. “It’s such an exciting time in our industry, and at FMCA, and having such extraordinary people and industry leaders on our team empowers us to set ambitious goals — and then exceed them.”

Mark Hyman, M.D., is a practicing family physician, a ten-time New York Times bestselling author, and an internationally recognized leader, speaker, educator, and advocate in his field. He is the director the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. The Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine opened a new 17,000-square foot space on the campus of the world-renowned medical center, demonstrating the growth—and stunning potential—of the Functional Medicine model.

There are more than 2,000 people waiting for appointments with Functional Medicine providers. The new space will enable practitioners to see twice as many patients in 2017 as they could in 2016. The opening of the new space was an “epic day,” said the Center’s director, Mark Hyman, M.D., on social media, where he said he was “humbled and awestruck.”

Preliminary findings show that 38.2 percent of ill patients who visited the Center for Functional Medicine reported improved physical health after treatment, as compared with 27.4 percent of patients who visited Family Medicine and CC Family Health Centers.

Larger-scale, randomized controlled trials are underway to build the evidence base for the Functional Medicine approach to treatment.

FMCA CEO and founder Sandra Scheinbaum kicked off a new podcast series with The Evolution of Medicine, and FMCA faculty member, James Maskell. In the inaugural “Future of Health Coaching” segment, Sandi talks with James about how and why health coaches are integral to the Functional Medicine paradigm. Listen to it here.

Scheinbaum will be at the Stanford Medicine X | ED conference on the future of medical education at the intersections of people, technology and design in Palo Alto in April, where she’ll present “The Power of Functional-Medicine Trained Doctors and Coaches to Create Patient-Empowered Healthcare.”

This month, Scheinbaum will join 20 other health and lifestyle experts as part of the Healthy, Wealthy & Slim virtual summit. Her interview will be featured on January 23.

Partha Nandi, M.D., F.A.C.P., host of the “Ask Dr. Nandi” TV show, spoke with Scheinbaum on a Facebook Live session in a series highlighting “health heroes.” Nandi is a practicing physician, chief health educator at WXYZ Detroit and an international patient advocate. His medical/lifestyle program airs on seven networks in the U.S. and 79 countries. They talked about how to thrive, both physically and mentally, by practicing mindfulness paired with expression of definitive character strengths. Watch it here.
