Functional Medicine Matrix
The functional medicine matrix is a framework for organizing and understanding the factors that influence a person’s health. It highlights the 7 key biological systems – Assimilation, Defense & Repair, Energy, Biotransformation & Elimination, Transport, Communication, and Structural Integrity – and maps them alongside lifestyle factors like nutrition, stress, sleep, and environment. Rather than looking at symptoms in isolation, the matrix helps practitioners see patterns and connections across the whole person. Developed by The Institute for Functional Medicine, it is a practical tool for applying the principles of Functional Medicine in a structured, visual way.
How is the functional medicine matrix used?
The matrix is used to step back and look at the bigger picture of someone’s health. Instead of focusing on a single symptom, it helps organize information across different systems of the body and areas of life to identify patterns that might otherwise be missed. For example, a concern like low energy might be connected to digestion, stress, sleep, or nutrient status. The matrix helps bring those pieces together in one place so they can be explored more thoughtfully and addressed in a more integrated way.
How do health coaches use the functional medicine matrix?
At the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, students learn how the functional medicine matrix is used as a way of understanding how different aspects of health are connected. This understanding helps health coaches guide conversations, support behavior change, and help clients focus on the areas that matter most for building sustainable whole-person health.
