Functional Medicine
Functional medicine is a personalized approach to healthcare that focuses on understanding the root causes of disease, rather than only managing symptoms. It views the body as an interconnected system and considers how factors like nutrition, lifestyle, environment, genetics, and stress influence health and wellbeing. Functional medicine emphasizes personalized care as practitioners seek to understand each individual’s unique history and use that to guide the recommended health plan.
How is Functional Medicine different from conventional medicine?
Functional medicine differs from conventional medicine in its focus on root causes, systems biology thinking, and individualized care. Conventional medicine often centers on diagnosing and treating specific diseases or symptoms; functional medicine looks more broadly at how different systems in the body interact and what underlying factors might be contributing to imbalance.
How is Functional Medicine used in the FMCA Curriculum?
The functional medicine curriculum in the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy program provides the foundation for understanding how lifestyle and environment influence health. Students learn key concepts like systems biology, root-cause thinking, and the interconnected nature of the body.
They learn the seven biological nodes, assimilation, defense and repair, energy, mitigation, communication, transport, and structural integrity, and how to use the IFM Functional Medicine Matrix and other IFM toolkit tools. This base knowledge is integrated with health coaching skills to prepare students to support clients in making sustainable changes.
