Leaky Gut

Leaky gut or intestinal permeability occurs when the lining of the small intestine becomes less selective about what passes into the bloodstream. Normally, the gut lining acts as a barrier, allowing nutrients through while keeping larger particles, microbes, and toxins contained. When that barrier is compromised, substances that are usually kept out, like toxins, may pass through more easily. This shift in the gut lining can be influenced by a range of factors, including stress, diet, medications, and imbalances in the gut microbiome.

What causes leaky gut?

A number of factors can influence the health of the gut lining over time. Ongoing stress, a diet high in ultra-processed foods, lack of sleep, certain medications, and imbalances in the gut microbiome can all play a role in intestinal permeability. It’s often not one single cause, but the combination of different influences that gradually affect how well the gut barrier functions.

How do health coaches support clients with leaky gut?

Health coaches support clients in strengthening the everyday habits that influence gut health. This often starts with helping clients understand how their daily routines, what they eat, how they manage stress, and how well they rest, may be impacting how they feel. Health coaches work with clients to make changes that are realistic and sustainable, rather than overwhelming. That might mean gradually shifting eating patterns, recognizing what may be impacting the gut lining, and creating space for rest and recovery. Over time, these kinds of steady, supportive changes can help create an environment that supports gut integrity and overall well-being.
