Methylation

Methylation is a biochemical process that happens in nearly every cell of the body. It involves the transfer of a small chemical unit, called a methyl group (made up of one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms or CH₃ ), from one molecule to another. Although simple in concept, methylation helps regulate many of the body’s essential functions. Methylation plays a role in turning genes on and off, producing neurotransmitters, supporting detoxification, repairing DNA, regulating inflammation, metabolizing hormones, and converting certain nutrients into forms the body can use. Because it influences so many biological processes, healthy methylation is an important contributor to overall health. Methylation depends on a combination of genetics, nutrition, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Nutrients such as folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, riboflavin, and choline all support methylation pathways, while chronic stress, poor sleep, inflammation, alcohol use, and certain medications may influence how efficiently these pathways function.

Why is methylation important?

Methylation is essential because it supports many of the body’s most fundamental biological processes. Rather than serving a single function, methylation helps regulate how cells communicate, grow, repair, and respond to their environment.
