Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, when hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, begin to fluctuate. Unlike menopause, which is defined as a single point in time, perimenopause can last several years. During this phase, the body is not simply producing “less” hormones; it’s producing them less consistently.

This fluctuation is what drives many of the symptoms women experience. Cycles may become irregular, shorter, longer, heavier, or skipped altogether. At the same time, women may notice changes in sleep, mood, energy, and how their bodies respond to stress, exercise, and nutrition. For many, this phase feels confusing. Patterns that once felt predictable no longer are, and symptoms can come and go without a clear cause.

From a coaching perspective, perimenopause is less about labeling symptoms and more about helping clients recognize changing patterns and adapt in real time.

Why do symptoms feel unpredictable during perimenopause?

During perimenopause, hormone levels fluctuate rather than steadily declining. Estrogen, in particular, can rise and fall unevenly from one cycle to the next, which can affect everything from mood and sleep to energy and metabolism. This variability means symptoms aren’t always consistent. A client might feel fine one week and completely off the next, which can be frustrating and confusing. Supporting your client and understanding this pattern helps normalize the experience.

How can a health coach support clients navigating perimenopause?

Health coaches can support clients by helping them build awareness around changing energy, sleep, and stress patterns, and adjusting behaviors accordingly. For example, a client who used to tolerate high-intensity workouts or inconsistent meals may need more recovery, more balanced nutrition, or more consistent daily rhythms. Coaches can help clients notice these shifts without judgment and experiment with new approaches that better support their current needs.
