Root Cause Medicine
Root cause medicine is an approach to health that focuses on understanding and addressing the underlying factors that contribute to symptoms or illness, rather than treating only the symptoms. Instead of asking “How do we get rid of this symptom?“, root cause medicine asks, “What’s driving this symptom in the first place?” By exploring the underlying factors, it aims to support more lasting improvements in health and well-being.
How is root cause medicine different from treating symptoms?
Treating symptoms often focuses on relieving what’s happening in the moment such as, reducing pain, lowering blood sugar, or improving sleep. Root cause medicine takes a step back and looks at why those symptoms may be happening in the first place. For example, instead of only addressing fatigue, a root cause approach might explore factors like stress levels, sleep quality, nutrition, or underlying imbalances that could be contributing. The goal isn’t to ignore symptoms, but to understand what’s behind them and support more sustainable change over time.
How do Functional Medicine Health Coaches support a root cause approach?
Health coaches don’t diagnose or identify root causes themselves, but they play an important role in helping clients follow through on the changes that support a root cause approach. They help people make sense of recommendations, build new habits, and stay consistent with lifestyle changes that can feel overwhelming at first. At the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, coaches are trained to support clients as they explore connections between daily habits and health, and to turn personalized recommendations into realistic, sustainable routines.
