In Functional Medicine, detoxification isn’t about replacing every meal with juice or drinking cayenne pepper water for a week. We believe in detoxing from a WHOLE-SELF perspective!
In this blog post, we’re going to dive into how to approach a whole-body detox.
Here are 5 Tips to a Whole Self Detox:
1. Sleep + Relaxation
Getting adequate amounts of quality sleep is vital to your ability to learn and process memories. Additionally, sleep helps our bodies recharge and restore energy, repair muscle tissue and triggers the release of hormones that can affect growth and appetite. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommended on average 8 hours of quality sleep.
If you find yourself staring at the ceiling, try a guided breathing exercise or guided imagery to help relax your mind.
Other tips to help you sleep better: Power your off electronics and turn your clock away from you. Try not to think about not falling asleep, and remind yourself that your body will eventually take over and help you sleep. If you find yourself awake for more than 20 minutes in bed, do something relaxing for a little bit, until you begin to feel tired and come back to bed.
2. Exercise + Movement
Ensuring that your body receives the appropriate amount of exercise benefits nearly all aspects of your life. Not only does it get blood flowing and help control weight, but it also improves your mental health, your mood and the strength of your bones and muscles.
It doesn’t have to be 60 minutes at the gym. Start and end your day with movement. Gently stretch the moment you get out of bed. Get out and walk in your local park, breathe fresh air, and enjoy the views of green. Incorporate movement in your “to-do” list. Don’t limit yourself by some “standard” of proper exercise. However movement looks to you, just get out there and move the way you love.
3. Functional Nutrition
Proper nutrition is key to a whole-self detox. Functional Nutrition is nutrition-based care that is focused on building health by restoring proper physiological functioning of the body. When you have multiple symptoms they are clues to the ways in which your body is not functioning the way it should be. Talk to a Functional Medicine Health Coach or doctor to ensure your body is working to its greatest potential.
4. Stress
Living a stressful life can manifest in your body in various ways, such as migraines, premature aging, anxiety, hair loss, trouble concentrating – to even more life-threatening chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, depression, digestive issues, and obesity. To help deal with stress, plan out your day ahead of time, review your to-do list, learn the art of saying no, and remember to take your day one thing at a time.
5. Relationships
Humans are social creatures – we crave social interactions. Having positive relationships makes you happier, and when you are happier you are more likely to attract better-quality relationships that will enlighten, energize, and encourage you.
